Cairo Citadel, Mosques and Khan Elkhalili

To protect the city, Saladin ordered the construction of a citadel in the mountains of Al Moqattam serve as fortress of the royal residence. The construction began in 1176. At the top of the hill sits Citadel of Saladin, which owes its name to the constructor of its eastern wall, Salah Eddin Al-Ayoubi. His arrival in the country, in 1171, involved the abolition of power Fatimid and the restoration of Islam as the official religion of Egypt.
