Climbing Axes?
Climbing axes are specialized tools used in ice climbing and alpine climbing to help a climber ascend slopes of ice or hard snow. They come in a range of sizes and styles to suit different types of climbing, and are an essential piece of equipment for anyone planning on tackling technical ice routes.
There are two main types of climbing axes: straight and curved. Straight axes, also known as technical ice tools, are designed for use in steep, vertical ice climbing. They have a straight shaft and a thin, pointed pick that is optimized for penetration and stability in hard ice. Curved axes, on the other hand, are better suited to more moderate slopes and mixed climbing. They have a bent shaft and a wider, more shovel-like pick that is better at cutting steps and performing other support functions.
Regardless of the type of climbing axe you choose, it is important to select one that is the right size for your body and climbing style. In general, a longer axe will offer more reach and leverage, but may be more difficult to handle in tight spaces. A shorter axe will be more maneuverable, but may not offer as much power.
When using a climbing axe, it is important to hold the axe with a firm, yet relaxed grip. The pick should be pointed downward and the axe should be positioned close to the body to maximize stability and control. To place the axe in the ice, the climber should strike the pick with a quick, downward motion, using the weight of the body to generate force. The axe should be placed deeply enough to provide a secure hold, but not so deeply that it is difficult to remove.
In addition to the pick, most climbing axes also have an adze or hammer on the back of the head. The adze is used for chopping steps and creating handholds in the ice, while the hammer is used for driving pitons or other protection into the ice.
Climbing axes are an essential piece of equipment for any ice or alpine climber. With proper care and maintenance, they can last for many seasons of use.
